Ever fancied a career as a spy?
If you have then GCHQ (British intelligence agency) have taken the unusual step of creating an online code breaking game as a way of attracting individuals with the necessary skills to help them fight the increasing threat of cybercrime.
How’s that for a work from home career with a difference!
Well, strictly speaking it’s probably not something that you would eventually do from home, but if you find yourself in the position of not having a job and would like to apply for something…a little bit different, opportunities don’t come any more unusual than this!
The code breaking game is designed to attract a modern-day generation of spies with a specific set of skills that will allow the UK to step up it’s fight against what has become a “worrying” rise in cybercrime.
“The target audience for this particular campaign is one that may not typically be attracted to traditional advertising methods and may be unaware that GCHQ is recruiting for these kinds of roles, a GCHQ spokesman said.
“Their skills may be ideally suited to our work and yet they may not understand how they could apply them to a working environment, particularly one where they have the opportunity to contribute so much.”
“Traditionally, cyber specialists enter the organisation as graduates.
However, with the threats to information and computer technology constantly evolving, it is essential that GCHQ allows candidates who may be self taught, but have a keen interest in code breaking and ethical hacking, to enter the recruitment route too.”
The main focus of advertising for the ‘Can you crack it?” challenge has been social networks such as Facebook and Twitter, and despite 1000’s of people trying to crack the code, only a handful of individuals have managed to do it.
Upon passing the challenge you are then offered the chance to apply for a full time position with the GCHQ, where you have the chance to become a cyber security specialist.
Oh how the world changes! Skip back 10 years and think about the limited opportunities on offer if we were looking for work, and right here we have the opportunity to work for a British intelligence agency, just for completing a puzzle on the Internet.
Got to love this modern world and the opportunities that it presents to us!
This opportunity is only open to British citizens, but if that means you are ineligible then why not give it a go anyway and see if you have what it takes?
Needless to say, I don’t have what it takes…otherwise I would be writing this from some secret location along with my other spy buddies.
But I’m not, I’m writing this from the comfort of my own home, hoping that one of our Work From Home Watchdog visitors has what it takes to protect the world from cybercrime!
If that should turn out to be you…please let us know!
